But I have this against you

Revelation 2:18-3:6 from the daily reading In the One Year Bible

“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this:

19 ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. 24 But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them—I place no other burden on you. 25 Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come. 26 He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations; 27 and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority from My Father; 28 and I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

3 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God. So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

In Revelation 1:8, the Lord identifies Himself saying:  “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”   With each of the messages to the churches, He says:  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”   So we today should take time to hear what the Spirit is saying. Although the words were written 2000 years ago, the Lord is the same. He is the God “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”   What He said then is applicable today and until He comes again.

The text says:  “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this:  ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them—I place no other burden on you. Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come. He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received authority from My Father; and I will give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”    The church today needs to hear and heed the message to Thyatira.  How many do we see today who have tolerated Jezebel, leading God’s people astray so that they commit acts of immorality? Many churches and denominations have embraced what God calls immoral. Many condone sexual immorality and the abomination of abortion. The text says: I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality.  Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds.  As we have seen, in 2 Peter 3:9 it says:  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.   The time that the Lord continues to give for all to come to repentance is His grace. But Jezebel does not want to repent and those who commit adultery, participating with her immorality will experience great tribulation. In Isaiah 5:20 God says:  Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!   Take notice of two things, the Lord says they tolerate the woman Jezebel and that they need to repent of her deeds. The church needs to understand and repent of even tolerating the immorality of the world. To repent means to change both the way we act and the way we think.  The church needs to stop thinking that it can tolerate, condone and embrace sin and still receive the inheritance of the kingdom. In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus says:   “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The text says:  “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”   There are many churches today that are lively, but are they alive with the Spirit? If the sound system was unplugged, would the living word still resound? It is not wrong to have great programs and professionals, but we should remember that Jesus says: “Where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20)  Whether it is two or three, or two or three thousand who have gathered, it should be in the name of Jesus; to see Him and the Father and it should be the power of the Spirit not the powerful sound that we seek.  In 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul says:  When I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.   That too should be what our gatherings are for, not superior speech, not the wisdom of man, not with persuasive words of wisdom, but on the power of God.  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14 God says: If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  May we today, the people of God, hear what the Spirit is saying, may we humble ourselves, pray and seek the face of God; may we repent and turn from the ways of the world so that we will see our land healed by the power of the blood of Jesus and the resurrection.  Amen.
