This I say, and affirm together with the Lord

Ephesians 4:17-32 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

The Christian’s Walk

So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

In today’s text Paul says:  So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way,  if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,  and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.   Paul says that what he is saying, he confirms together with the Lord.  From the beginning of Jesus ministry He preached saying: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 4:17)  In John 3:3;5-7 Jesus says:  “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”   In John 8:10-11, after defending the woman caught in adultery from her accusers, Jesus said:  “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?”  She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”   In John 5:14, after healing the man at the pool of Bethesda, it says:  Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”   So it would seem that Paul was in fact affirming and confirming what Jesus Himself said. In Christ we are recreated in the likeness of God; in righteousness and holiness. Several times in Leviticus God said:  Be holy, for I am holy.   In Isaiah 5:20, He says:  Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!  In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus says:  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.  Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’”    If we are in Christ, we cannot continue in the lusts of deceit. If we continue to practice lawlessness, even though we call Him Lord, Jesus says He does not know us. Knowing and being in Christ should cause a discernible difference in us.

Paul continues saying:  Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.   To be angry and not sin means that we should have righteous anger. Like Jesus, we should be angry at the things that offend God not ourselves. We should forgive rather than holding on to offense.  Paul says:  He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.   In Matthew 12:31-37 Jesus says:  “I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.  “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.  For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”   The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and it is the Holy Spirit that convicts us regarding sin and righteousness. So if we believe a lie and continue in unrighteousness, the Holy Spirit is grieved because He has revealed the truth. We are not unaware of sin, rather if we continue in sin it is by our own choosing, and so by choosing to believe a lie, we grieve the Holy Spirit.   Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ; precious Holy Spirit; thank You for Your word which is truth. Thank You that more than just revealing the truth to me, You have actually given me the Spirit of Truth to me. I choose to believe and to walk in the truth of the Spirit of Truth; to be changed, recreated in Your likeness, by the redeeming and restoring work of the cross.  Amen.
