Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Psalm 119:97-112 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

O how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
98 Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are ever mine.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
Because I have observed Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 I have sworn and I will confirm it,
That I will keep Your righteous ordinances.
107 I am exceedingly afflicted; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
108 O accept the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord,
And teach me Your ordinances.
109 My life is continually in my hand,
Yet I do not forget Your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,
Yet I have not gone astray from Your precepts.
111 I have inherited Your testimonies forever,
For they are the joy of my heart.
112 I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, even to the end.

In John 14:15;21;23-24 Jesus says:  “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments… He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him…  If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”  If we truly love Jesus, we will not only be obedient to His word and His will, we will love His word.  The psalmist says:  O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.  What is it that we meditate on all day? The TV? Social media? Listening to the voices of the world, it is no wonder why so many people are filled with fear and discouragement. It is no wonder why so many are confused and misinformed. The psalmist says: Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, For they are ever mine. I have more insight than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts.  Nearly ever major institution of higher education in this country was founded with a mission to teach Biblical truth, recognizing that without truth, human wisdom is foolishness. When the mission of education is no longer to teach people to think and seek truth, but rather to indoctrinate them to believe what they are told, people lose insight. When God’s precepts are no longer observed, there is no understanding of truth.

The psalmist says:  I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word. I have not turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.
Today restraint from evil is neither taught nor encouraged. In Isaiah 5:20 God says: Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!  Yet, that is exactly though what our society and culture is doing. It calls evil good and good evil. Criminals are honored and glorified, while police are disparaged and vilified. It substitutes darkness for light and light for darkness. Those who stand by and for God’s ordinances are mocked, ridiculed and canceled by our culture. God’s word is not restrictive and limiting as the world says it is, rather it is freeing. It is sweet and it is truth.

The psalmist says: Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
I have sworn and I will confirm it, That I will keep Your righteous ordinances. I am exceedingly afflicted; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word. O accept the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, And teach me Your ordinances. My life is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Your law. The wicked have laid a snare for me, Yet I have not gone astray from Your precepts. I have inherited Your testimonies forever, For they are the joy of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, even to the end.
   Amen.
